Life is so busy! The search for that "still, small voice" often gets shoved aside as we go about our days. I believe that God is found within us and all around us, we just have to live with our eyes and ears open to the presence of the Spirit. We can find the Creator in nature, in community, in solitude, and yes, even in a building where all different styles of worship can be found. The search for love, acceptance, and eventually our authentic selves is life-giving. Being loved, comforted and resting in the long, loving gaze of God is a gift to yourself as you sit in direction.
I like to describe spiritual direction as "companionship with another on the journey of finding God in the everyday". It offers an opportunity to sit with another person and ask the big and small questions of life and to speak your truth to a listener who is empathetic and non-judgemental. I offer a safe space for you to share how you experience (or don't) God in your life. In the Christian tradition, we also invite the Holy Spirit to join us in the encounter and speak into the longings of our hearts. Intentionally giving our attention to God is both the beginning and the end goal of Spiritual Direction.
The journey of spiritual direction is unique to every person who walks through the door of a spiritual director's space. In a visit you might look for an awareness of God’s presence in the mundane, the heart-breaking or the joyful. Or you might find your answer when you are seeking discernment, when you are searching for your authentic self, or when your view of God is changing and you are confused about how to reconcile your past view with your new perspective. Any and all questions stirring in your soul are welcome. When you walk in the door for spiritual direction the time is yours and yours alone. And there is always a space for quiet reflection if that is what you need for your spirit to thrive. Sitting quietly in the long, loving gaze of God is an amazing gift to give yourself!
